I have several copies of “The Railway Engineer” from the 1920’s. It was a monthly railway technical paper, I have the annual bound volume versions. Here’s a few samples. Yes that big U shaped thing is a pneumatic boiler riveter, suspended off the overhead crane. The other item of interest is the article on the new double sided rail saw. Hand operated by one man. They reckon it can cut a rail in 15 minutes – this is 95lb/yard bullhead I guess, as that was the most likely option at the time. I’d say that 15 minutes is a bit optimistic. Having cut rails with petrol powered rail hacksaws they can often take over 5 minutes, although that was some years ago using an old secondhand saw on a heritage railway.
